Classic World Job Advancement: Requirements and Steps
MapleStory Classic World job advancement happens at Lv 10 (1st job) and Lv 30 (2nd job), both with the same instructor in your job’s home town. Lv 10 is the level for every class, Magicians included, and you complete your 1st job by talking to that instructor. The 2nd job is a four-quest test: carry a letter to a helper outside town, collect 30 marbles in a hidden map, then bring proof that you passed back to your instructor.
Classic World job advancement at Lv 10: who to talk to
Every character starts as a Beginner on Maple Island. The Beginner’s Guide covers your first levels there. At Lv 10 you choose one of four jobs by talking to its instructor (Grand Launch Release Notes):
| Job | Instructor | Instructor’s map | Town | Skill book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Dances with Balrog | Warriors’ Sanctuary | Perion | Warrior Basics |
| Magician | Grendel the Really Old | Magic Library | Ellinia | Introduction to Magic |
| Bowman | Athena Pierce | Bowman Instructional School | Henesys | Bowman Basics |
| Thief | Dark Lord | Thieves’ Hideout | Kerning City | Introduction to the Thief |
Warriors’ Sanctuary, the Magic Library and Thieves’ Hideout open straight off their towns. The Bowman Instructional School is reached through Henesys Park. Each 1st job skill book holds six skills.
A few things trip up new players:
- Magicians need Lv 10 too. Rain in Amherst asks about this in Rain’s Maple Quiz 5: Warriors, Bowmen, Thieves and Magicians all need to be at least Lv 10 to advance.
- You can’t advance on Maple Island. Rain’s last question, in Rain’s Maple Quiz 7, says the job advancement happens only on Victoria Island. Take the ship from Southperry by talking to Shanks.
- Some NPCs use older job names. Phil in Lith Harbor calls the four jobs Swordsman, Magician, Archer and Rogue. They are the same jobs: Swordsman is the Warrior in Perion, Archer the Bowman in Henesys, and Rogue the Thief in Kerning City.
- Choose carefully. Phil’s Call’s quest log notes that a job advancement can’t be undone once made.
If you land in Lith Harbor before Lv 10, start Phil’s Call. Phil gives it to Beginners from Lv 8, and you finish it by returning to him at Lv 10 for 188 EXP, 245 mesos, 8 Red Potion and 8 Blue Potion. Phil also offers to send you to the job town you pick, for a discounted fee.
2nd job: the four-quest test at Lv 30
Not Lv 30 yet? Each class has a training guide up to Lv 30: Warrior, Magician, Bowman and Thief. Training Spots by Level covers every class.
Magicians: spend your 1st-job points first (Before you advance), then see what to add as a Fire/Poison Wizard, Ice/Lightning Wizard or Cleric from Lv 30.
At Lv 30 you go back to the instructor who gave you your 1st job. Every quest in the test needs Lv 30 and that 1st job, so a Warrior can only take the Warrior test.
Each class’s test is four quests in a row:
The first two quests give 4,780 EXP each, so the test is worth 9,560 EXP in all.
Step 1: talk to your instructor
Visit your instructor on the same map as your 1st job. The first quest starts and ends with them, with nothing to collect.
Step 2: deliver the letter
Your instructor hands you a letter and sends you to a Job Instructor on a field map near town. Give the letter to the Job Instructor to finish the quest.
| Job | Letter | Job Instructor | Map | How to get there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Dances with Balrog’s Letter | Warrior Job Instructor | West Rocky Mountain IV | Perion → West Street Corner of Perion → West Rocky Mountain I → II → III → IV |
| Magician | Grendel the Really Old’s Letter | Magician Job Instructor | The Forest North of Ellinia | Ellinia → The Field Up North of Ellinia → The Tree That Grew I → The Forest North of Ellinia |
| Bowman | Athena Pierce’s Letter | Bowman Job Instructor | The Road to the Dungeon | Henesys → The Road to the Dungeon (one portal) |
| Thief | The Dark Lord’s Letter | Thief Job Instructor | Construction Site North of Kerning City | Kerning City → Sunset Sky → Construction Site North of Kerning City |
Don’t skip step 1. Each quest opens only after the one before it is complete, and each Job Instructor’s own line points you back to your instructor in town.
Step 3: collect 30 Dark Marbles
The Job Instructor gives you the real test: enter a hidden area, defeat the monsters there, and collect 30 Dark Marbles (Warrior, Magician, Bowman, Thief). Each class has its own Hidden Street map, every monster in it is Lv 30, and another Job Instructor stands inside it.
| Job | Test map | Monsters (all Lv 30) | Collect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Warrior’s Rocky Mountain | Fire Boar, Lupin | 30 Dark Marble |
| Magician | Magician’s Tree Dungeon | Curse Eye, Horny Mushroom | 30 Dark Marble |
| Bowman | Ant Tunnel For Bowman | Evil Eye, Zombie Mushroom | 30 Dark Marble |
| Thief | Thief’s Construction Site | Cold Eye, Blue Mushroom | 30 Dark Marble |
These are Lv 30 versions of monsters you may have met elsewhere. Each has 718 or 789 HP and gives 56 EXP. Hand the 30 Dark Marbles to the Job Instructor on the field map to pass.
Step 4: bring The Proof of a Hero home
Nexon fixed a bug on October 21, 2026 where the 2nd job advancement could fail and remove the quest item if your Use inventory didn’t have enough empty slots.
The Job Instructor tells you that you passed and gives you The Proof of a Hero (Warrior, Magician, Bowman, Thief). Take it back to your instructor in town to finish the test and choose your 2nd job path.
2nd job paths for each class
At Lv 30 you talk to your instructor to choose one of these paths. Each skill book’s page lists its skills.
| 1st job | 2nd job | Skill book |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Fighter | Fighter Techniques |
| Warrior | Page | Page’s Path |
| Warrior | Spearman | Spearman Techniques |
| Magician | Wizard (Fire/Poison) | Fire & Poison Basics |
| Magician | Wizard (Ice/Lightning) | Ice & Lightning Basics |
| Magician | Cleric | Holy Magic Basics |
| Bowman | Hunter | Hunter’s Guide |
| Bowman | Crossbowman | Crossbowman Guide |
| Thief | Assassin | Assassin Skills |
| Thief | Bandit | Bandit’s Tricks |
